A visit to the city center: the Altstadt contains a lot of half-timbered houses. Walk through the pedestrian zone (Lange Straße) to the old town hall and to the gorgeous old bridge over river Werra. At its end you can walk through a small sculpture garden on the river island Blümer Werder (accessible from the middle of the bridge). When you‘re already walking through the city: take a look at the churches St. Blasius and the former Aegidienkirche: you will find the tombstone of Dr. Eisenbarth there.
Climb up to the Tillyschanze: it’s a special place – the tower is within the federal state of Lower Saxony, the restaurant belongs to Hesse and has no zipcode. You can climb up on multiple paths like the Zick-Zack-Weg (beginning on the other side of the river Fulda when coming from the city center) that looks like its name. If you want to get up the tower (which is absolutely recommended) you just need to pay a small fee at the restaurant and they will unlock the door electronically. Read more…
Do some exercise and climb up to the Weserliedanlage: a special monument for the beloved river Weser including the text of an ancient song („Lied“) about the river. You can walk up from the end of the old bridge over river Werra – you need to walk trough a residential zone, pass under old railway tracks, then turn left and walk steadily up the hill. Follow the Laubach through its valley: You can go by car to the Biohotel Werratal or the Grundmühle and follow the small river Laubach into the mountains. It is a nice small valley, you need to cross the river several times on big stones lying around (the wooden bridges which were once there aren’t repaired anymore) – a nice adventure. Walk along the river Glasebach and feel like in the Netherlands: Park your car next to the restaurant Spiegelburg and walk along the river Glasebach through its nice valley. Enjoy different types of forests with their various plants and changing light, cross the river on improvised stone bridges. Afterwards have a break at the restaurant Spiegelburg operated by a couple from the Netherlands: they serve the best Frikandel Spezial of the region. Read more…
Hike in the forest and have a coffee break at the Rinderstall: the old cattle stall near the Steinberg mountain is a well-known destination for the locals. Walk on a wooden path through the swamp Hühnerfeld: It’s a wonderful landscape and it is especially beautiful to see the water run under and along the wooden path through this unexpected swamp in the Kaufunger Wald not far away from Hann. Münden. And even for kids it seems to be fascinating! If you reached the end of the path you can simply return on it or walk around the Hühnerfeld back to your car. Read more…
Discover an abandoned railway tunnel: Because of the fact that Hann. Münden was once the most southern harbour of the kingdom of Hannover and the border wasn’t too far away, a special railway track not leaving the own territory was build: the Hannöversche Südbahn. It was later abandoned because of a better track. But you can still find the old route, an abandoned railway bridge and you can walk through the old Volkmarshäuser Tunnel with its beautiful tunnel portals. Read more…
Take a boat and watch the city from the water: On the river island Tanzwerder next to the Weserstein you can catch the ship called Europa. But better check the schedule before online! Enjoy the best views on the valley of river Werra from the Kramberg-Schutzhütte: it is high above the river, it can be seen from far away but you need to know that you need to follow the Werra-Burgen-Steig marked as X5H at the trees along the way. You can climb up from Hermannshagen, see a wonderful wild forest on your way, explore an old quarry and then enjoy a brilliant view on the hydroelectric power station and the motorway and railway bridges crossing the river Werra. Go to the cloister and have a good lunch: the Kloster Bursfelde is a wonderful cloister near river Weser outside of the city. It is a place to cool down, sometimes with concerts and exhibitions. Read the poem of the Weserstein aloud: if you haven’t been at the Weserstein you haven’t been at Hann. Münden! It’s just a simple stone (or better said: two stones, a new version was added) but it marks the beginning of the wonderful river Weser. Discover a Roman camp in the forest: During the Roman campaigns in Germania (12 BC-16 CE) the Roman Empire tried to defeat the Germanic tribes, secure the border at the river Rhein and extend its reign to the river Elbe in the east. Germanic people had crossed the Rhein several times and invaded Gallia which the Romans had declared their territory. Play in the forest at the Tannenkamp and discover secret places: it‘s a fantastic playground with many small paths, valleys and hills to explore. You can find the open-air stage Freilichtbühne Tannenkamp with it’s mystical atmosphere, an old ting (meeting point) hidden in the forest and if you want to go a bit further you can also find an old quarry in an area that is today obviously not visited by many people. Enjoy various plants and trees at the Forstbotanischer Garten: it is not that big but quite important because of the large number of different trees and plants. In addition you can see the typical rocks that can be found in the region. The Forstbotanischer Garten did once belong to the University of Göttingen which had a remote faculty in Hann. Münden. Cross river Weser on a ferry boat: who needs a bridge when he has the Weserfähre Hemeln? Getting over to the other side by boat is fun and on both sides of the river you’ll find restaurants where you can have lunch or a coffee break. Every time you use the ferry you’ll cross a boarder. The one between Lower Saxony (Hemeln) and Hesse (Reinhardshagen). Especially the beer garden at Hemeln (‘Zur Fähre’) is famous and many bikers get there for a beer or a Strammer Max. Read more…
Take a tour around the lakes of the former mining area at the Kleiner Steinberg: around the mountain top for a long time basalt and coal was mined. Walk on hidden tracks through the forest and see smaller and larger lakes that now cover the mining area. Search an old well in the forest: the Rauschenbrunnen near the Galgenberg has already seen better days but it is a gem hidden between trees. And worth a nice walk beginning from the only roundabout in Hann. Münden at the Vogelsang. Follow the street named Galgenberg and turn right into the forest. Walk up the hill through the Steinbachtal: the river Wandersteinbach ends at the river Fulda close to Bonaforth. You can park your car close to the bridge at the Bundesstraße, visit the Mordsteine close to the bridge and then follow the small river up the hill. You‘ll have to cross several bridges while finding your way. At the upper end you can refresh at the Jochenbrunnen or continue to the Waldgaststätte Rinderstall. Read more…
Search for the ruin of a robber-knight fortress in the forest: between Hemeln and Glashütte you can park your car next to the road and follow a track into the forest. There you will find the donjon of the Bramburg from the 11th century and you can search for rests of the walls and play in the wonderful forest. Best combine this with cake and coffee at the restaurant Klostermühle Bursfelde (distance: 14 km, 0:18 h). Read more…
