The Amavi

Amavi, Göttingen, Germany

This area of Göttingen, Germany was once a black spot: the “Güterbahnhofstraße” was known for just two things – the freight terminal (including cargo-based traffic on road and rail) and the red-light district. Everything changes over time, the area was developed and one of the buildings close to the tracks has been refurbished and now hosts an Italian restaurant, bar and discotheque: the “Amavi“.

Same procedure as every week

Thanner's Tag & Nachtschänke, Göttingen

Wednesday. Every damn Wednesday. I have the feeling of having spent years in my life at the Thanner’s Tag & Nachtschänke in Göttingen, Germany. It is a rather dark but comfy bar directly at the Wilhelmsplatz. I was there every week during school and study times and while I was active in politics I told people that I would have my weekly consultation hours here – they were used frequently.

A controversial monument

Memorial to the Göttingen Seven, Göttingen

If you are leaving the railway station in Göttingen, Germany you cannot miss to see the newest monument in town. The privately funded pedestal by artist Christiane Möbus is at first sight a mere copy of the Ernest Augustus memorial close to the railway station of Hanover – without king Ernest on top. Uncovered just some days ago it has already attracted a lot of mockery and malice.

The Z.a.K.

ZAK, Göttingen

Bars and restaurants come and go, but the Z.a.K. (located close to the market place in Göttingen, Germany) is an institution. It opened in 1993, has a warm and welcoming atmosphere because of the wooden interior and the dishes are named after classic movies – I guess the names are still the same as 20 years ago.  You can also sit outside and watch what is going on on the Wochenmarkt.
