We wanted to spend some days in and around München, Germany. It was the time of the last days of the Oktoberfest and getting a hotel room was expensive. The biggest problem was to find a family room in a hotel where you have a separate room for our six year old companion. As this failed we decided to rent an away home and found one at the southern end of the Starnberger See in a small village called Seeshaupt. It included access to the lake, a great garden and a boat – which sounded like a very good option. Continue reading “House at the lake”
Since 1298
When it comes to event locations, Kassel (Germany) has a lot to offer. Besides the fair grounds, the Stadthalle and the buildings of the documenta there are different smaller places. One of them is the Renthof directly at the river Fulda. It is a part of the former cloister of the Carmelites (named after Mount Carmel) from the 13th century CE. It is connected to the former church Brüderkirche next to it. Continue reading “Since 1298”
Somewhere at Altenessen
We were looking for a hotel not far away from the Amphitheater in Gelsenkirchen, Germany as we wanted to attend a concert there. Our requirements were low but we were pretty late and therefore had to take the Astoria City Resort hotel in Altenessen, a city quarter of neighboring Essen, Germany. It was at least 45 minutes on foot away from the concert location. Continue reading “Somewhere at Altenessen”
The Sperlingshof
If you’re looking for a hotel in the outskirts of Berlin, Germany the Sperlingshof in Dallgow-Döberitz might be an option. It is located west of Spandau, 20 kilometers away from the capital cities vibrant city center. It is close to the federal road 5, surrounded by a forest but a supermarket and a gas station are also close-by. Continue reading “The Sperlingshof”
Cheap & easily reachable
When staying in Hannover, Germany I was normally couch-surfing at the home of friends. This time I had to book a hotel and a recommendation was the ibis hotel in Vahrenwalder Straße – a rather cheap one, but it gives you the possibility to reach the main railway station of Hannover within three stops of the tramway. Visiting the cloister
Morschen is a small town south of Melsungen, Germany. There you can find the cloister Haydau dating back to the year 1235 CE – beautifully preserved and now used for cultural events. You can also book a guided tour or enjoy the nice garden. Attached to it is the modern hotel named after the cloister, often used for conferences. Continue reading “Visiting the cloister”
Premier Inn
The Premier Inn is a hotel at terminal 4 of the Heathrow airport in London, England. It is located next to the Hilton airport hotel and connected to terminal 4 by a footbridge. It offers good hotel rooms and as a special feature it has its own Costa coffee bar in the basement.
Next to the airport
Our flight back from Edinburgh to London was scheduled for 7 am – not so easy if you want to be at the airport two hours before the flight. Therefore I decided to invest the money and stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel directly at the airport. I don’t know if it was worth the big amount of GBP but it made travelling much easier. Continue reading “Next to the airport”
Cute & remote
If you want to stay close to Loch Ness the Inch Hotel in Fort Augustus, Scotland might be the right choice. I found it to be a pearl of a hotel in its unique style. It is located outside the town on a small hill with good views on Loch Ness and some Highland Cattle (Kyloe) next to it. It looks a bit old-fashioned on the inside but I really liked this traditional style. Continue reading “Cute & remote”
Living underground
The Mercure Haymarket is a nice hotel located a little bit aside in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is not too far from the Haymarket you can reach by tramway from the airport and the walking distance to Edinburgh castle is also still acceptable. The place is well decorated, clean and has very friendly staff and a good Scotish breakfast (including Haggis). Continue reading “Living underground”
