It is a memorial many people get close to every day without recognizing it: the Gedächtnis der Gleise (memory of the railway tracks) at the main railway station (Kulturbahnhof) of Kassel, Germany. I just discovered it by accident after using the railway station for two years twice a day.

When it comes to event locations, Kassel (Germany) has a lot to offer. Besides the fair grounds, the Stadthalle and the buildings of the documenta there are different smaller places. One of them is the Renthof directly at the river Fulda. It is a part of the former cloister of the Carmelites (named after Mount Carmel) from the 13th century CE. The documenta is one of the biggest exhibitions for contemporary art held every five years for 100 days in Kassel, Germany. At more than 30 locations indoor and outdoor you can discover art works and temporary restaurants and bars enhance the city. In 2017 the 14th documenta is held in Αθήνα, Greece and Kassel, Germany – the central exhibition hall Fridericianum is filled with exhibits from museums in Greece.

There are some words which you really dislike if you’re a frequent user of trains in Germany: “Weichenstörung” (switch point failure), “Stellwerksausfall” (railway control center failure), “Personenschaden” (damage to persons), “Signalstörung” (signal failure), “geänderte Wagenreihung” (changed order of rail cars) and of course “Schienenersatzverkehr“. The Himmelsstürmer is one of the most famous art works in Kassel, Germany – originally named Man walking to the sky by the artist Jonathan Borofsky. It was created for the art exhibition documenta IX in 1992 and was placed by that time on the Friedrichsplatz in Kassel. The Martinskirche or St. Martin in Kassel, Germany is an iconic Protestant church. Its two modern towers attached to an old church in Gothic style can be seen from many parts of the city. Construction works started in 1364 and the church was opened in 1462. Since 1524 it is a Protestant church.
