Once it was a gravel pit, now it is one of the most important recreational areas of Göttingen, Germany. The 15 hectares big lake in the southwest at the border to Rosdorf is a good choice if you want to walk a nice round on a sunday afternoon. But you can also have a picnic there, take your kids to a playground or do water sports.

Just a plain and simple Indian eatery on the main road leading from the railway station of Göttingen, Germany to the city center. The Rani Dharba belongs to a very good Indian restaurant in town and serves nice Indian meals in a reduced atmosphere. Continue reading “Rani Dharba”
Last night in exile
Once upon a time there was a famous rock music club in Göttingen, Germany: the “Outpost“. It was indeed an outpost in an industrial zone of the city. Famous bands like the Bloodhound Gang or the Guano Apes played here until in 2003 the rental agreement wasn’t prolongued by the landlord. Continue reading “Last night in exile”
The Amavi
This area of Göttingen, Germany was once a black spot: the “Güterbahnhofstraße” was known for just two things – the freight terminal (including cargo-based traffic on road and rail) and the red-light district. Everything changes over time, the area was developed and one of the buildings close to the tracks has been refurbished and now hosts an Italian restaurant, bar and discotheque: the “Amavi“.

Same procedure as every week
Wednesday. Every damn Wednesday. I have the feeling of having spent years in my life at the Thanner’s Tag & Nachtschänke in Göttingen, Germany. It is a rather dark but comfy bar directly at the Wilhelmsplatz. I was there every week during school and study times and while I was active in politics I told people that I would have my weekly consultation hours here – they were used frequently.
A controversial monument
If you are leaving the railway station in Göttingen, Germany you cannot miss to see the newest monument in town. The privately funded pedestal by artist Christiane Möbus is at first sight a mere copy of the Ernest Augustus memorial close to the railway station of Hanover – without king Ernest on top. Uncovered just some days ago it has already attracted a lot of mockery and malice.
Unusual concert location
I’ve seen a lot of concert locations during the last months – but none of them seemed as odd as the Stadthalle in Göttingen, Germany. A much too high ceiling, a too bright atmosphere, medium quality sound, people sitting on the upper floor and a supporting act playing in front of a plain white banner. Not the best preconditions for a nice evening.
Just a Guinness or two
The Irish Pub is one of my favourite bars in Göttingen, Germany. In the summer a nice beer garden invites you to enjoy a Guinness, Strongbow or Cider under the trees within the center of the town. When the weather conditions are bad or in the evenings, there are two floors inside with a dark but very hospitable atmosphere.
The Z.a.K.
Bars and restaurants come and go, but the Z.a.K. (located close to the market place in Göttingen, Germany) is an institution. It opened in 1993, has a warm and welcoming atmosphere because of the wooden interior and the dishes are named after classic movies – I guess the names are still the same as 20 years ago. You can also sit outside and watch what is going on on the Wochenmarkt.
Bittersweet symphony
Let’s face it: the Tangente has already seen its best days – but the club is still worth a visit. The fact that the kids nowadays rather gather at the EinsB, the Savoy or the JT-Keller might also be an advantage – leaving back a relaxed crowd on the dancefloor.
