The Passat

Passat, Lübeck

The Passat is a sailing ship named after the famous wind. It was built in 1911 and was used until 1957 and is now anchoring in the harbour of Lübeck-Travemünde, Germany. The ship is 115 meters long and was built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, Germany.

Katedra św. Marcina i Mikołaja

Katedra św. Marcina i Mikołaja, Bydgoszcz

The cathedral św. Marcina i Mikołaja (St. Martin and Nicholas) is the oldest church of Bydgoszcz, Poland. I came here for the wedding of a Polish colleague and enjoyed the atmosphere in the colorful Roman-Catholic church.

The Westerturm

Westerturm, Duderstadt

If you walk across the city center of Duderstadt, Germany you cannot omit seeing the Westerturm – the last visible part of the city fortifications. It is a gate first mentioned in 1343 and it has a specialty: the tower on top is twisted because of a construction mistake.

St. Cyriakus

St. Cyriakus, Duderstadt

The church St. Cyriakus is the Roman-Catholic cathedral of Duderstadt, Germany. It dates back to the year 950, the current building with its two towers was built in 1240. It was destroyed by a large fire in 1852 but fastly restored.

Red and white town hall

Rathaus, Duderstadt

Duderstadt, Germany is the main city of a Catholic diaspora in Protestant south Lower Saxony. It is part of the Eichsfeld, a region separated during the times of the GDR and now part of two federal states within Germany.

Schloß Schönbrunn

Schloß Schönbrunn, Wien

A little bit outside of the city center of Wien, Austria you can find the beautiful Schloß Schönbrunn, a town’s landmark of the city. It’s name goes back to emperor Matthias who was hunting here and found a nice well (“schöner Brunnen“).

The Prater

Prater, Wien

The Prater in Wien, Austria is a well-known are in the capital city that also contains a famous amusement park (the Wurstelprater or Volksprater). It can be seen from far because of the giant wheel that became a town’s landmark of Wien.

Karlskirche, Wien

The Karlskirche in Wien, Austria is a famous Roman-catholic church built in baroque style and a town’s landmark of the city. It was built in the 18th century and symbolizes the connection between Roma and Byzantine (todays Istanbul).

Hundertwasserhaus

Hundertwasserhaus, Wien

The Hundertwasserhaus in Wien, Austria is a special residential building designed by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. He made different proposals to make residential homes more human – including trees as tenants (“Baummieter) and the right to paint the outside facade as wide as your arm reaches (“Fensterrecht“).

The Hofburg

Hofburg, Wien

The Hofburg in Wien, Austria was from the 13th century until 1918 the residence of the emporer. Today it is the seat of the president of Austria and contains other institutions like the Albertina. It was also home to Franz Joseph I. and his wife Elisabeth von Österreich-Ungarn.
