When moving by subway throughout Berlin, Germany you can discover something irritating when leaving at the station “Kochstraße“: In the middle of the street there is an US-American military checkpoint and a sign telling you that you’re about to leave the American sector. The castle Trendelburg is a very well preserved fortification in Trendelburg, Germany; belonging to northern Hesse. It is dating back to the year 1303 CE and is nowadays a place for medieval festivals and fairytale adventures. It is one of the smaller castles of the area but the location near and above the city is pretty fascinating.

There are lots of abandoned railway tracks throughout Europe – some became unnecessary because of the technical progress and some have been replaced by better (but often more expensive) routes. One example that has been revived is the track leading from Kassel to Naumburg, Germany – now used for steam engine rides.

Just a plain and simple Indian eatery on the main road leading from the railway station of Göttingen, Germany to the city center. The Rani Dharba belongs to a very good Indian restaurant in town and serves nice Indian meals in a reduced atmosphere. Continue reading “Rani Dharba”
Bears had a tough time in Germany. In zoological gardens they were held in too small cages. They had to travel with circusses to amuse people. And if found in the wild they were hunted. The “Alternativer Bärenpark” in Leinefelde-Worbis, Germany turned a bad example of a zoological garden into a safeharbour for bears and wolves. Continue reading “Where the wild things are”
Town halls in Germany always seem to be from the 1970s and to be built out of washed-out concrete. The one in Gießen, Germany is no exception but it is well placed in the inner city center and has a very good infrastructure surrounding it. Try the car park at the city hall, if you arrive by car! Once upon a time there was a famous rock music club in Göttingen, Germany: the “Outpost“. It was indeed an outpost in an industrial zone of the city. Famous bands like the Bloodhound Gang or the Guano Apes played here until in 2003 the rental agreement wasn’t prolongued by the landlord. Continue reading “Last night in exile”
Bad Harzburg is a small town within the Harz mountain range in northern Germany. It is a spa town, offers a casino and you can go by teleferic to the castle mountain above. Since 2015 it has another attraction – the “Baumwipfelpfad“; you can take a one kilometer long walk throughout the treetops of a forest.

This area of Göttingen, Germany was once a black spot: the “Güterbahnhofstraße” was known for just two things – the freight terminal (including cargo-based traffic on road and rail) and the red-light district. Everything changes over time, the area was developed and one of the buildings close to the tracks has been refurbished and now hosts an Italian restaurant, bar and discotheque: the “Amavi“.
