There are many good reasons for having a cat at home – and also many for not having one. Sometimes people in your household have allergies. In my case, I’m just travelling too much to have a pet. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the pleasure of watching cats playing or sleeping (which they often do). At the city quarter Charlottenberg of Berlin, Germany, you can find the coffee bar ‘Zur Mieze‘ – the home of seven cats.

The Teufelsberg (devil’s mountain) at Berlin, Germany, is a lost place. Deteriorating and shabby. A place you can explore, where you can learn about espionage and a location full of anarchy that you might experience in Germany only in Berlin. It is the second highest mountain in the city, and it is artificial – created from the wreckage originating from World War II. Located within the British occupation zone, it was first used by the United States of America to control the air space over the divided German capital.

The Jewish cemetery at Berlin-Weißensee is the largest one in Europe. It was created in 1880 and contains on 42 hectares more than 115,000 graves. Because of the Jewish burial tradition which causes that graves remain forever, you can see very old graves here and very beautiful ones. The continuous deterioration and nature extending over the graves make this a beautiful place. Another good reason to visit this place are the buildings in Italian Renaissance revival style made with yellow bricks.

The Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kreuzberg in Berlin, Germany, is not the right hotel for you if you like quiet environments. It is located at the Skalitzer Straße with the drug deals of Görlitzer Bahnhof direct in front of it. But if you like to be at the centre of the action this place is great – for example, it is only a very short walk to the great club SO36. As a surplus, the hotel is located above the wonderful Korean restaurant Kimchi Princess.

If you like good views for dinner you can’t miss a visit to the NENI at the Breitscheidplatz close to the railway station ‘Zoologischer Garten‘ of Berlin, Germany. It is serving high-class oriental food in a wonderful atmosphere: through big glass windows you can look over the zoological garden which looks like a forest. Already the mezze request hard decisions: humus or falafel? Or some speciality from Libanon or Marocco?

It is one of the biggest botanical gardens in Germany on an area of 43 hectares containing 22000 different plants: the Botanischer Garten of Berlin, Germany. It belongs to the Freie Universität Berlin and serves scientific purposes, but it is also a tourist attraction (attracting half a million visitors each year). Some bars and restaurants offer ice cream and drinks. And it is in fact so large that you can walk around there for hours and easily get lost.

Finding a hotel in the South of Berlin, Germany can be quite a problem. I wanted to attend a confirmation ceremony at a church in Lankwitz, but there isn’t any place to sleep. An area full of residential homes far away from the touristy capital. Therefore I booked the nearest hotel at Steglitz, the Hotel Steglitz International.

The summer residence of Sophia Charlotte of Hanover is a wonderful palace in the West of Berlin, Germany and with its garden it invites for long walks. It was opened in 1699 and was named Lietzenburg after the village next to it. It was extended continuously, especially after she became queen of Prussia. When Sophia Charlotte in 1705 (aged 36 then) her husband named the castle and the village after her: Charlottenburg. Still today the city quarter name Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf refers to her.

It is a retirement home for old illuminated letters and advertisement signs: the Buchstabenmuseum (letter museum) at Berlin, Germany. Since already 14 years a club of volunteers collects and exhibits letters and advertisement signs with a history. They had to change their location already five times and are now located under a Stadtbahnbogen near S-Bahn stop Bellevue.

I never went to the Ku’damm to find something to eat. I thought the restaurants in that area might not fit to my needs but I had to learn that I am wrong.
