Sweden meets Dresden

I had to wait several years until I had the chance to attend a live concert of Mando Diao – a Swedish band I listened to intensively for many many years. And then I found a concert at the Alter Schlachthof in Dresden, Germany that fitted well. And that is why we started a road trip.

We went by car using the motorway A38 and checked in at the ship-hotel Pöppelmann in the center of Dresden on a sidearm of river Elbe. I knew this special hotel from a former trip and it was located perfectly – only some minutes from the Alter Schlachthof entfernt.

We checked in and walked to the old city center with the Zwinger, the Semperoper and the Frauenkirche. On the way we enjoyed the famous Canaletto view. All my prejudices were fulfilled as a right-wing party was demonstrating angrily in front of the Frauenkirche. I was already there when this church was still destroyed – as the result of another right-wing extremist party once active in Germany.

After visiting the historic city center we went to the restaurant Schwerelos within the Kugelhaus next to the main railway station. Food and drinks are served there on a rollercoaster-like system. From there we went to the Alter Schlachthof and enjoyed the concert. Afterwards we returned to the ship where I always enjoyed to sleep in the past – but my wife was ‘sleepless in Dresden‘ because of people above us having a party.

Next morning after having breakfast we made a short stop at the Blaues Wunder and had a look at this famous bridge. Then we continued to the Sächsische Schweiz and the well-known Elbe Sandstone Mountains. We visited the Bastei and the Basteibrücke and climbed through the ancient Felsenburg Neurathen.

The concert was a good reason for such a trip and I really enjoyed being at Dresden once again. But the most beautiful thing was in fact to be at the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and to explore this nature protection area with its fantastic rock structures.
