The Flora

The city of Köln, Germany grew and grew – and there were only limited green areas in the city center. And then the botanical garden close to the cathedral also had to close because this space was needed for the new main railway station. Therefore a new botanical garden was created close to the zoological garden and it opened in 1864 – called the Flora.

To design this botanical garden the Prussian garden director Peter Joseph Lenné could be engaged. He combined the garden styles of different European countries (Germany, Italy, France and England) and made plans for different greenhouses and a central building also called Flora or Crystal Palace (also combining different historical architectural styles).

Today you can have long walks to discover the different used styles, watch squirrels climb the trees, discover the glass houses or eat something at the restaurant. The main building of the Flora seems to be used mainly for wedding parties – an absolutely nice place for that.
