Burg Hardegsen has a long and somewhat layered history, with its origins going back to the Middle Ages. The most prominent surviving part, the Muthaus, was built in 1324 by the lords of Rosdorf and later came into the possession of duke Otto von Braunschweig–Göttingen, becoming a residence for members of the Welfen dynasty.
Today, the castle complex is for sure no longer a military stronghold but a preserved historic site. What remains can still be impressive: the Muthaus, with its thick stone walls and medieval character, is the real highlight, and parts of the old complex also include a later Amtshaus from the 18th century.
The Muthaus is today used for cultural events, private celebrations, exhibitions and meetings, and the great hall is also used for civil weddings in spring and summer. Right next to it lies the pleasant Kurpark, a green space with a pond, paths, benches and a pavilion, which gives the whole area a calm and attractive setting for a visit.
