Copacabana & Ipanema

A lot of songs have been sung about these two beaches in the Zona Sul de Rio de Janeiro, both only divided by the Forte do Copacabana. Remember The Girl from Ipanema? The areas are in the rich south of Rio and are touristic zones secured by the police. If you don’t have your hotel here (might be better, cause the prices in the area are a bad joke) – the metro is running all along Copacabana and for Ipanema you can go to the terminus General Orsório.

You might get to the beaches to go swimming, but mainly you go there to have a drink at one of the numerous postos and watch people playing games or doing sports at beach. Each segment is dedicated to different kinds of people or sports. Overall, Copacabana is nice (and it has the Pão de Açúcar in the background) but I liked Ipanema more – because it is slightly less touristic and you always have a nice view in the evening on the lights of Vidigal hill. Go one street back in parallel and you’ll find restaurants and bars.
