Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore

Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, Firenze

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is the cathedral of Firenze, Italy and one of the most impressive churches I’ve ever seen. Already from the outside it looks magical and unreal. It was built from the year 1229 on and the giant dome is a masterpiece for that time. Continue reading “Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore”

The Palazzo Vecchio is a the ancient parliament of the republic of Firenze (now part of Italy) and serves today as the town hall of the city. It was built from the year 1299 on and also included private rooms for the members of parliament. It looks like a fortification because it should protect the parliament against the citizens. Where the tulips grow

Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands

I went to Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands to present a scientific poster about a project at a conference held in no-man’s-land. A good location to concentrate on science – a bad one for additional exploration tours. But in fact there was a bus route from Amsterdam to Den Haag crossing this place and I tried different stops. Leidseplein

Leidseplein, Amsterdam

Amsterdam, The Netherlands is well known to be a good place for a party – and I did this several times in the past. If you need a starting place for warm-up, consider the Leidseplein – a major square in the east of the city center. Here you will find plenty of bars and restaurants and you can sit outside. Continue reading “Leidseplein”

Not that one

Haarlem, The Netherlands

If you speak about Haarlem, most people in the world would think about Harlem in New York, United States. In fact that part of the big apple was founded by Petrus Stuyvesant in 1638 as Nieuw Haarlem – referring to a small city 19 kilometers east of Amsterdam. Continue reading “Not that one”

More beautiful than Amsterdam

Leiden, The Netherlands

I love living at and with water, that’s why I like Amsterdam, The Netherlands. But the city is too big and too crowded and there is no green close to the water of the town canals. When I was around for a scientific conference I found Leiden – a smaller town I immediately fell in love with. Continue reading “More beautiful than Amsterdam”
