Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is the cathedral of Firenze, Italy and one of the most impressive churches I’ve ever seen. Already from the outside it looks magical and unreal. It was built from the year 1229 on and the giant dome is a masterpiece for that time.

It is 107 meters high and has a diameter of 45 meters – it was finished in 1434. The inner side is covered by a fresco made by Vasari who wanted to create an artwork more important than Michelangelos fresco in the Sixtine Chapel in Roma. But in fact the dome is too far away from the ground and it is impossible to see all details of the vast work.

The cathedral of Firenze is the fourth largest church in Europe after St. Peter’s basilica in Roma, Italy,  St. Paul’s cathedral in London, United Kingdom and the Duomo in Milano, Italy.
