Aeropuerto Internacional Ministro Pistarini, usually called Ezeiza Airport or simply EZE, is Buenos Aires’ principal international gateway. It lies near the town of Ezeiza, roughly 22 kilometres south-west of the city centre, and handles most of Argentina’s long-haul flights. Travellers should distinguish it from Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, which is much closer to central Buenos Aires and serves many domestic and regional routes.
The most straightforward access is by road along the Riccheri motorway, which connects with Buenos Aires’ ring roads and the city’s major expressways. From the centre, an official taxi, pre-booked private transfer or airport shuttle is generally the least complicated option, with the journey commonly taking about 40-60 minutes, depending heavily on traffic. Coach services such as Manuel Tienda León connect the airport with central Buenos Aires, while public buses, including Route 8, offer a cheaper but slower alternative. There is no direct railway station at the airport, so rail travel involves an additional road connection.
For a smooth departure, allow considerably more time than the distance might suggest: Buenos Aires traffic can be unpredictable, particularly during weekday commuting periods. Check the terminal and transport arrangements before setting off, use authorised taxis or established transfer companies, and keep valuables secure during the journey. The airport’s official operator provides current information on flights, parking, lounges and access arrangements.
The airport was conceived during the 1940s under President Juan Domingo Perón, with Juan Pistarini, then Minister of Public Works, playing a central role in promoting the project. Construction began in 1945, and the airport opened on April 30th, 1949 after being built largely by Argentine technicians. At the time it was an exceptionally ambitious complex, with several runways and a scale that reflected Argentina’s post-war modernisation plans; it was named in honour of Pistarini and has since developed into the country’s principal international aviation hub.
