Paraná

The Río Paraná is one of South America’s great rivers and the continent’s second-longest after the Amazon. It is formed in southern Brazil where the Rio Grande and the Paranaíba meet, then flows through Brazil, along parts of the Paraguay–Brazil and Paraguay–Argentina borders, and southwards through Argentina for roughly 4,880 kilometres before joining the Uruguay river in the Río de la Plata estuary and reaching the Atlantic Ocean.

For Argentina, the Paraná is far more than a geographical feature. It is a major commercial and transport artery, linking the agricultural heartland with ocean-going trade through ports along the lower river. Its basin supports farming, industry, fishing, hydroelectric power and extensive wetlands, while the river and its islands form an important ecological system. The Paraná also has a strong cultural significance: many of Argentina’s major cities, including Rosario, Santa Fe and Paraná, developed in close relationship with its waters.

Rosario is one of the best places to experience the river because the city’s centre opens directly onto a long, attractive waterfront. Begin at the Monumento Nacional a la Bandera, where the Paraná provides a broad and impressive backdrop, then walk north along the Costanera through Parque de España and the Parque de las Colectividades. This route combines river views, green spaces, cafés and a lively atmosphere, particularly towards sunset.

For a more natural experience, take a boat across to the islands opposite Rosario or visit the La Florida area, where the river landscape becomes less urban and more recreational. A short excursion reveals channels, sandbanks and low-lying delta vegetation, while the Rosario–Victoria bridge offers another memorable perspective over the water and islands. Check local departure times and river conditions before setting out, as the delta is dynamic and access can vary with water levels.
