Bandera

The Monumento Nacional a la Bandera, or National Flag Memorial, is Rosario’s most important landmark. Standing beside the Paraná river, it commemorates the first hoisting of Argentina’s flag by General Manuel Belgrano on February 27th, 1812. The monumental complex is designed to evoke a ship moving through the waters of eternity, an appropriate image for a site overlooking the river and its broad islands.

The memorial’s history is closely linked to Argentina’s struggle for independence. Belgrano had established defensive batteries near Rosario, naming them Independencia and Libertad, and raised the blue-and-white flag during that period. The present monument was designed by Ángel Guido and Alejandro Bustillo, with sculptures by Alfredo Bigatti and José Fioravanti. Construction began in 1943, and the complex was inaugurated on June 20th, 1957, Argentina’s Flag Day.

There is plenty to examine beyond the imposing central tower. The Civic Courtyard leads towards the Propylaeum, whose colonnade contains an eternal flame dedicated to those who fought for independence. The Pasaje Juramento links the monument with Rosario’s historic centre and is lined with sculptures, while the surrounding galleries and ceremonial spaces express important episodes in the country’s national history. A crypt beneath the memorial is associated with Belgrano, and the interior includes displays connected with Argentina’s flags and national heritage.

For a visitor, the most rewarding activity is taking the lift to the tower’s observation platform, where the Paraná, the river islands and Rosario’s skyline unfold in a single wide panorama. It is also worth visiting the monument at a quieter time, then walking along the nearby riverfront and continuing through the historic centre via Pasaje Juramento. If your visit coincides with June 20th, expect major ceremonies and a particularly patriotic atmosphere; otherwise, the site remains an impressive place to combine architecture, history, photography and views over the river.
