The Velorace in Dresden is a city-centre cycling event that has been held since 2013 and has become a fixed part of the national racing calendar. It grew out of the wider Saxon cycling tradition and has steadily developed into one of the best-known mass-participation races in eastern Germany.
What makes it so appealing is the route through the historic heart of the city. Riders pass landmarks such as the Frauenkirche area, the Zwinger, the Semperoper, the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion and the Gläserne Manufaktur, while the course also takes in views along the Elbe and across to the three Elbe castles.
From a spectator’s point of view, it is unusually rewarding because much of the action unfolds in full view on broad inner-city roads. The course loops through Dresden’s old and newer quarters, and returns to streets where the same buildings can often be seen from different angles, which gives the race a distinctly urban sightseeing feel.
Its special character lies in the contrast between fast-paced sport and a city full of history and architecture. The atmosphere is more relaxed than a closed-road mountain event, yet still competitive, family-friendly and very visual, with the finish at the Terrassenufer giving the whole occasion a memorable setting on the river.
