The Oderparksee at Hattorf am Harz is a pleasant, human-made lake set in a quiet corner of the southern Harz fringe. It has the feel of a place shaped by landscape and local planning rather than by nature alone, which gives it a distinctive character and a surprisingly calm atmosphere.
For a walk, it works very well. A circular route of a little over two kilometres runs around the water, with open views across the lake and plenty of places to pause and take in the surroundings. The setting is especially appealing if you enjoy easy, unhurried strolls with a mix of water, greenery and broad skies.
What makes it more than just a pretty lake is the sense of a living local area around it. The lake is linked to recreation, angling and nature appreciation, while the wider Hattorf area offers further walking and cycling opportunities in the meadows, forests and gentle hills nearby. At the same time, the waterbody has developed into a valuable biotope with a varied plant and animal life.
It is not a place for swimming or boating these days, so expectations should be set accordingly. For me, that is part of its appeal: it is best enjoyed as a peaceful excursion spot, ideal for a short walk, a break on a bench by the water, and a relaxed visit that fits neatly into a day in the Harz foothills.
