Hiddensee

Hiddensee is a small, car-free island in the Baltic Sea, just west of Rügen, known for its tranquillity and unspoilt natural beauty. It feels deliberately detached from the modern world, where bicycles and horse-drawn carts replace traffic, and the pace of life slows down immediately upon arrival. The island has long attracted artists, writers, and those simply looking to escape noise and crowds.

The landscape is strikingly varied despite the island’s modest size. In the north, you find the elevated Dornbusch area with gentle hills, heathland, and sweeping views over the sea. Further south, the terrain flattens into wide sandy beaches, dunes, and salt marshes that stretch almost endlessly along the coastline. The light here has a special quality – clear, soft, and constantly shifting – which gives the island a distinctive atmosphere in every season.

„Hoch stand der Sanddorn am Strand von Hiddensee
Micha, mein Micha, und alles tat so weh
Dass die Kaninchen scheu schauten aus dem Bau
So laut entlud sich mein Leid ins Himmelblau“

– Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen, Nina Hagen

There is plenty to explore without ever feeling rushed. The lighthouse at Dornbusch is one of the island’s landmarks and offers panoramic views across the Baltic. Kloster, the cultural centre, is home to small museums and galleries, including places dedicated to Gerhart Hauptmann. Vitte, the largest village, provides a relaxed hub with cafés, shops, and access to the harbour, while Neuendorf in the south feels more traditional and quiet, with charming thatched houses lined along sandy paths.

Getting to Hiddensee is straightforward and already part of the experience. A ferry runs regularly from Schaprode on Rügen to the island, connecting the three main villages of Neuendorf, Vitte, and Kloster. The approach by sea gives you a first glimpse of the island’s low silhouette and wide horizons, setting the tone for a stay defined by simplicity, nature, and a refreshing sense of calm.
