The Lovrijenac fortress of Dubrovnik is located outside of the old town. From the Pile gate you can walk down to the old harbor and on the other side climb up the hill to the fortress. It’s steep but very much worth the effort, especially for wonderful pictures of the city. The fortress was built from the 11th century CE on to protect the city against attacks from the sea and from the land. The location of the fortress is breathtaking as it is standing solitary on a rock.
You need a ticket to enter but don’t worry: the ticket is included in the ticket you receive when entering the city walls. It is a bit strange that they don’t directly include it into the DubrovnikCard, but they’ll ask you whether you’ve been on the walls already at the entrance. Inside the fortress isn’t very spectacular; it is used as a theatre and as always at Dubrovnik it was also a stage for Game of Thrones. Observe the Latin inscription at the main gate: Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro. ‘Freedom is not to be sold for all the treasures in the world‘ became the motto of Dubrovnik.
