Things aren’t that obvious in Halle (Saale), Germany. You won’t expect to find a lovely old city center behind those GDR-style Plattenbauten close to the railway station. You might not think that there is a chocolate factory and museum. But one thing you can’t ignore if you arrive: a big advertisement in form of a globe between the railway tracks reminds you that there is a zoological garden.
The zoo of Halle is in the north of the city. You can reach it by S-Bahn from the normal railway tracks or with tramway 12 from the side entrance of the station. It is a modern zoological garden situated on a hill, which makes it quite unique. It is not that big but lots of wonderful species are living there – especially the penguin area is great, because they swim pretty close to the visitors. And if you need a break: there is also a beer garden.
