Reaching Borkum by ferry is straightforward if you plan the connection via Emden. AG EMS operates regular services from Emden’s outer harbour (Außenhafen) directly to Borkum’s Reede harbour. From there, the narrow-gauge island railway, the Borkumer Kleinbahn, takes you into the town in about fifteen minutes. The entire sea-and-rail journey is designed to be seamless, with coordinated timetables so that you can step off the train and onto the ship with minimal waiting.

To reach the departure point by rail, take a Deutsche Bahn service to Emden Hauptbahnhof and then change to a local train to Emden Außenhafen. Some regional services run directly to the outer harbour, which saves an extra change. The station at Außenhafen is right next to the ferry terminal, so you simply walk across to the check-in area. If you are coming from further afield in Germany, long-distance trains to Emden connect well with these regional services, making the whole trip feasible without a car.
AG EMS offers two types of vessel on the Emden–Borkum route. The conventional car ferry takes around two hours and ten minutes, giving you time to stretch your legs on deck and enjoy the North Sea air. The high-speed catamaran (the ‘Nordlicht’) cuts the crossing to roughly one hour, which is ideal if you prefer a quicker transfer. Both options include the subsequent island train ride in the ticket price, so there are no surprises when you arrive at Borkum’s harbour.
What makes this connection special is its integration and reliability. The ferry schedules are aligned with the tides and the island railway, and in many cases your luggage can be checked through to your final accommodation on Borkum. In winter, the slower ferry often runs when the catamaran is laid up due to weather, ensuring year-round access. For travellers who appreciate a well-organised journey, the combination of mainline rail, short local train, and coordinated ferry service offers a calm and efficient way to reach one of the most appealing of the East Frisian Islands.
