Dittsche – Das wirklich wahre Leben is a German comedy series centred on an unemployed Hamburg man who regularly visits a local snack bar. Wearing a dressing gown, jogging bottoms and bathing sandals, Dittsche exchanges empty beer bottles for full ones and then launches into elaborate theories about politics, sport, science and everyday life. His arguments are based on what the programme humorously presents as dangerously incomplete ‘half-knowledge’, making him both exasperating and oddly endearing.
The series was created by comedian and actor Olli Dittrich for the WDR broadcaster and first aired in 2004. Its deliberately modest setting is the real Eppendorfer Grill-Station in Hamburg, rather than a conventional studio set. The visual style resembles a slightly drab security-camera recording, which strengthens the impression that viewers are observing an ordinary conversation in a genuine neighbourhood takeaway.
A defining feature is its improvisational method. There is no conventional script: Dittrich arrives with ideas and situations for Dittsche, while the other performers have to react spontaneously, allowing conversations to develop unpredictably. The earliest episodes were produced with only a short lead time, and from the second series onwards the programme was broadcast live, enabling it to respond to current events with unusual immediacy.
The central characters are Dittsche, played by Olli Dittrich, and Ingo, the patient but increasingly exasperated snack-bar proprietor, played by Jon Flemming Olsen. Their exchanges form the heart of the programme, with Ingo trying to keep the business running while Dittsche turns every beer and currywurst into a grand theory about the world. The third member of the original trio was Schildkröte (lit. ‘turtle’), played by Franz Jarnach: a silent regular in a distinctive imitation-crocodile jacket who sits with his back to the action, drinks his beer and says virtually nothing.
Eppendorfer Grill-Station
The Eppendorfer Grill-Station is a traditional Hamburg snack bar on Eppendorfer Weg, offering hearty, uncomplicated German comfort food in a distinctly local setting. It is the sort of place where you can enjoy grilled chicken, bratwurst, currywurst with chips, burgers, homemade meatballs, schnitzel, pork knuckle, Leberkäse with fried potatoes, salads and changing lunchtime specials. In colder weather, the menu may also include filling soups and stews.
The snack bar was used as the setting for the television series Dittsche, which made it famous far beyond Hamburg. Nevertheless, it is not merely a film set or museum-like curiosity: the Eppendorfer Grill-Station remains an operating snack bar serving genuine meals, and it still attracts many fans of the series who come to see the familiar location while enjoying a proper currywurst, schnitzel or grilled chicken.
