Kunstforum

The Bucerius Kunst Forum is a compact international exhibition centre in the heart of Hamburg, situated at Alter Wall opposite the Rathaus courtyard. Rather than maintaining a permanent collection, it presents around four carefully curated exhibitions each year, bringing together works from museums and private collections around a particular artist, theme or period. Its purpose is to place familiar works in fresh contexts and to reveal connections between different eras and artistic disciplines.

The subjects range from antiquity to modern and contemporary art. Previous exhibitions have explored Pompeian wall paintings, Renaissance and Baroque masters, French painting, photography, Surrealist sculpture, flowers in art and the depiction of children. The relatively intimate scale is one of its strengths: exhibitions generally contain about 100 works, allowing visitors to examine the selection closely rather than feeling overwhelmed by a vast collection.

At present, until 16 August 2026, the forum is showing F.C. Gundlach: You’ll Never Watch Alone. The exhibition marks the centenary of the photographer’s birth and includes his celebrated fashion photographs alongside previously unpublished images and colour prints that have rarely or never been displayed. It also examines Gundlach’s importance within the networks and alliances that shaped post-war photography; from September 11st, 2026, the next major exhibition will explore Jewish art collectors in Germany and reunite approximately 100 modern works once scattered around the world.

The institution was founded in 2002 through the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, a foundation with a long-standing commitment to education, scholarship and culture. It originally operated in a former bank building near Hamburg’s Rathausmarkt, before moving in June 2019 to its present premises at Alter Wall. The redesigned building combines a large exhibition space with an auditorium, a light-filled courtyard, an atelier and facilities for talks, concerts, readings and educational activities, making the Bucerius Kunst Forum both an exhibition venue and a lively cultural meeting place.
