Trauttmansdorff

The Gärten von Schloss Trauttmansdorff in Meran is a large botanical garden set around Trauttmansdorff castle, combining landscaped grounds with a historic castle and museum. It is known for its varied plant collections, sweeping views over Meran and the surrounding mountains, and for offering far more than a simple walk through flowers.

Visitors can wander through around 80 garden landscapes spread across 12 hectares, with paths that lead past terraces, streams, themed planting areas and seasonal displays. The garden is arranged so that each section feels different, with plants from many parts of the world alongside Mediterranean and alpine scenery.

There is also plenty to do as well as see. You can explore the four themed garden worlds, enjoy lookout points, visit the sensory and experience stations, and spend time in the Touriseum inside the castle, which tells the history of tourism in the Alps.

What makes it especially appealing is the atmosphere: it feels both carefully designed and very relaxed, with a strong sense of place. In spring and summer the colours are at their best, but even beyond the blossoms it is a rewarding visit for anyone who enjoys gardens, culture and a setting with real character.
