The Forst Spezialitäten-Brauerei in South Tyrol has a long and distinctive story, beginning in 1857 in Forst near Algund, just outside Meran, and remaining on the same site ever since. Its location was ideal from the outset, thanks to excellent spring water, natural winter ice storage, and the practical access route through the valley.
Over time, the brewery grew under the Fuchs family, who took control in 1863 and helped develop it into one of Italy’s major beer producers while keeping it family-run. That continuity matters in South Tyrol, where local identity, craftsmanship, and long-standing businesses are highly valued, and Forst has become part of the region’s economic and cultural landscape.
Its product range is broad, with a strong focus on speciality beers and seasonal brews, alongside well-known bottled and draught classics. Felsenkeller is the beer I can recommend most after testing all alternatives. The brewery also keeps expanding and modernising its production while staying rooted in tradition, which is one reason it remains so recognisable beyond the province.
A visit is especially appealing because of the lovely beer garden, the Braugarten Giardino Forst, which is easy to reach by public bus from Meran. Bus line 217 connects Meran with Forst, and the stop is directly opposite the beer garden, making it a very convenient stop for a relaxed afternoon in the area.
