The Kuenser Waalweg is one of those gentle South Tyrolean walks that combines landscape, heritage and a very pleasant pace. A Waalweg is a path that follows an old irrigation channel, originally built to carry water through drier areas, and today these routes are often lovely, mostly level hiking trails.

What makes the Kuenser Waalweg special is its atmosphere: it runs for much of the way through shady mixed woodland, so it is especially rewarding on warmer days. It also still retains much of its original character, which gives the walk a more authentic, traditional feel than many other easy trails in the area.
Another highlight is the changing scenery. As you leave the forest above Kuens, the view opens up beautifully towards Meran, and that contrast between cool woodland and bright valley panorama is a real part of the appeal. The route is also pleasantly unhurried, making it ideal for a relaxed half-day excursion rather than a strenuous mountain hike.
You can beat start the tour at the Tiroler Kreuz above Dorf Tirol, which is a very practical and scenic access point. From there, the walk leads into the Spronser valley towards the Waal channel, making for a straightforward and enjoyable outing with a proper sense of place.
