Massa Marittima is one of the most atmospheric small cities in Tuscany, a place where medieval stonework, steep lanes and wide views come together beautifully. Its old centre feels surprisingly grand for such a compact town, and that is part of its charm.
Historically, it grew in importance because of the rich mineral resources in the surrounding Metalliferous Hills, especially silver, copper and pyrite. The town flourished in the Middle Ages, became a free commune in the 13th century, and left behind much of the architecture that still gives it character today.
What makes it special is the balance between history and setting. Massa Marittima is not simply a museum piece; it is a lived-in hill town with a strong identity, lovely views towards the Maremma, and an authentic feel that is less crowded than many better-known Tuscan destinations. The mineral past, medieval layout and artistic heritage all combine to give it a distinct personality.
The main places to visit are Piazza Garibaldi with the Cathedral of San Cerbone, the Palazzo Comunale and the Fountain of Abundance, then the Palazzo del Podestà with its archaeological collection. It is also worth going up to the Torre del Candeliere and the Cassero for the views, and, if time allows, visiting the mining museum and the nearby archaeological and natural sites around lake Accesa.
