Subterraneo

The Museo Subterraneo and Museo della Miniera in Massa Marittima are compact, atmospheric museums that recreate the experience of working underground and tell the long story of mining in the Colline Metallifere.

Housed in former travertine galleries that were later converted into a museum by retired miners in 1980, the site preserves a network of three connected tunnels of roughly 700 metres laid out on a single level, giving visitors an authentic sense of the mine’s scale and structure.

The visit combines a guided underground walk with above‑ground exhibition rooms: in the galleries you encounter examples of extraction and support techniques, a display of local minerals and veins, and the actual tools and machines used by workers; the newer ‚Subterraneo’ display spaces add maps, archival documents and multimedia panels that broaden the social and technological history of mining in the area.

Visits are organised as guided tours at set times and you need to register in advance for the underground tour – bookings are handled by e‑mail through the museum’s contact address.
