The Tehnički Muzej Nikola Tesla in Zagreb is one of the city’s most distinctive museums, combining a broad history of technology with a strong focus on science education. It was founded in 1954 and opened to the public in 1963, on a site that had once been tied to Zagreb’s tram history. The museum later adopted Nikola Tesla’s name, which suits it well, because its whole spirit is about making engineering and invention feel alive rather than distant.

Inside, you can see a varied collection that ranges from transport and mining to energy, aviation and practical machinery. One of the most memorable parts is the Demonstration Cabinet devoted to Tesla, where experiments and reconstructions help explain ideas such as rotating magnetic fields, high-frequency transformers and wireless transmission. There are also displays that show older industrial equipment, vehicles and technical systems, so the museum feels like a journey through the practical side of modern life.

Nikola Tesla himself was born in 1856 in Smiljan, in present-day Croatia, and later became one of the most influential inventors in the world. He is best known for developing alternating current systems, which made large-scale electricity distribution far more efficient and usable. He also worked on the induction motor, the Tesla coil, radio-related technology, remote control and various high-frequency electrical devices, often thinking far ahead of his time.

What makes Tesla so compelling is not only the list of inventions, but the way he imagined the future. He was fascinated by electricity as a force that could transform everyday life, and many of his ideas laid the groundwork for the electrified world we now take for granted. A visit to this museum therefore gives you both a good overview of Croatian technical heritage and a vivid reminder of how one brilliant mind helped shape the modern age.
