Botanički vrt

The botanical garden of Zagreb is one of the city’s loveliest places to slow down, and it has an especially interesting story. It was founded in 1889 by Professor Antun Heinz as part of the University of Zagreb, with construction beginning shortly afterwards and the first plantings taking place in 1892. From the start, it was meant to serve both science and the public, which is why it has long felt like a working garden as well as a peaceful city park.

What makes it special is the way it combines research, history and atmosphere. The garden holds thousands of plant species from Croatia and from around the world, including rare and endangered native plants, so it has real botanical value rather than simply being ornamental. Its layout also gives it character: there are landscaped areas in different styles, quiet paths, ponds, small bridges and a calm, almost hidden feel despite being so close to the city centre.

There is plenty to visit once you are inside. You can wander through the outdoor collections, look at the native Croatian flora, and spend time in the greenhouses, where tropical and subtropical plants create a completely different mood. In spring and summer, the flower beds are at their best, and the whole place feels like a sheltered pocket of nature where you can easily spend an unhurried hour or two.
