Zadar

Zadar is one of those Adriatic cities where the past feels woven into everyday life. Its roots go back more than 3,000 years, beginning as an ancient settlement that later grew under Roman rule, and you can still see traces of that long history in the street plan, the old walls and the remains of the Roman forum.

What makes it special is the mix of old and new. You can wander through a compact historic centre filled with Roman, medieval and Venetian layers, then step straight onto the seafront to hear the Sea Organ or watch the Sun Salutation light up at dusk, which gives the city a very distinctive atmosphere.

There is plenty to visit in and around the old town. The Roman forum, St. Donatus church, St. Anastasia‘s cathedral and the Terraforma gate are among the best-known sights, and the bell tower offers fine views over the rooftops and the coast.

Zadar also works well as a base for exploring the wider region. From here, it is easy to reach beaches, nearby islands and national parks, so a visit can combine sightseeing, seaside relaxation and day trips without feeling rushed.
