The Área Protegida Miraflor northeast of Estelí, Nicaragua, is on the one hand a nature protection zone with beautiful forests and on the other hand an area of rural farming. Not too many tourists find their way on the non-paved roads to this special area of the country. Temperatures are different to those in the lower regions, infrastructure is less good – but therefore you can experience the rural life and try the products produced here.
And that is not only coffee, it is also everything you need for life, including milk and eggs, tortillas and bananas. At Miraflor you can hike through cloud forests, discover orchids and birds, search for waterfalls and monkeys or ride on horsebacks. Tour guides are centrally booked and managed, the fincas help you with that. They also prepare their own trails on their land that you can use; most often they’ll charge you a small fee. Exactly the same is true if you need to pass private property, so it is always a good idea to have some small money in your pockets.
