The hotel Petka at Dubrovnik is a special case: it is recommended in modern tourist guides, but looks rather old-fashioned. It is in the non-touristy harbor area but good for tourists, because it is close to the cruise boat harbor and the bus terminal. You can enjoy more normal Croatian life but you’ll always need to take a bus to get to the ancient city center.
But that is not an issue as there is a bus stop directly in front of the hotel. Bus lines 1a/b and 3 take you directly to the Pile gate. The rooms are also a bit ancient but therefore the rooms have a balcony with views on the harbor and an amazing sundown every evening. Breakfast was more than good.
The infrastructure for budget travelers in this area of the city is quite well: it is a short walk to the bus terminal and in between you’ll also find a Konsum supermarket that is open until 9pm. If you’re searching for some beer and snacks check out the Dubrovnik Beer Company in direct vicinity.
