Schlachthof

Within Kassel, Germany, you will find different smaller concert venues which give you the chance to listen to a wide range of bands – newcomers and bands with a smaller audience. One of them is the Schlachthof in the city quarter Nord-Holland close to the university. At this location, there was once the slaughterhouse of the city until it was moved to Waldau in 1973. The buildings have been destructed and the Elisabeth-Knipping-Schule, a school providing vocational education, was built. Only the gatehouses remained and are now the home of the community centre and concert hall.

In 1978 a local initiative requested a community centre and cultural center and was able to claim the buildings for this purpose. It also serves as a youth centre and cares about migrant education. If you want to see a concert there, you can find it in the left building. The stage is located within a newly built room attached to the old building and next to it you can find a cosy bar where they care about you and ensure you don’t get thirsty. I came here first for Les Barbeaux, a French band from Languedoc. They are touring since 2005 mostly throughout France and Belgium (singing in French) and play very danceable French folg rock/punk/ethno/gypsy music. Nice guys and a great evening!
