Finanzministerium

If you get to the German Federal Ministery of Finance at Berlin, Germany you might be a bit surprised. It is located in a special building at the city quarter Mitte which is today called the Detlev-Rohwedder-Haus. It was built in 1935 and is a very good example for threatening fascist architecture.

By that time it was home to Hermann Görings Reichsluftfahrtministerium (Ministry of Aviation). During GDR times it was used by the Volksrat and as the Haus der Ministerien – the GDR was officially founded here on October 7th, 1949. Since 1999 the Finanzministerium uses the building.

Don’t miss the publicly accessible picture Aufbau der Republik (‘Set-up of the Republic‘) by Max Lingner on the outside. It is painted on porcelain from Meißen and shows life in the GDR as the government wanted it to be seen. It replaced a giant stone relief of Wehrmacht soldiers with swastikas and was installed between 1950 and 1953.
