From Germany Japan is quite far away but sometimes it is pretty near: thanks to the big Japanese communities especially at Düsseldorf and Frankfurt we are able to enjoy original Japanese dishes and sometimes walk through nice Japanese gardens. The biggest Japanese garden in Germany is at a rather unexpected location – in Kaiserslautern.
A private association created this small paradise on 14.000 squaremeters. You can walk through different landscapes, take a look at a stone garden and a tea house, sit a different lakes and feed the koi carps. It was opened in the year 2000 and was constructed after delegation of the city visited Bunkyō, a part of the Japanese capital Tōkyō and partner town of Kaiserslautern. Nowadays it is the most important sight in Kaiserslautern (in addition to the Fritz-Walter-Stadion and the Gartenschau) and already advertised at the motorway with a big touristic sign.
What if I’m hungry?
Within the park there is a small outdoor eatery that serves Japanese drinks and at weekends also very good starters. We tried some udon noodles, yakisoba noodles, gyōza (dumplings) and daifuku (rice cake with bean paste). They where all fantastic and would even only get here to eat some food.
At the garden there are several festivities throughout the year. We arrived just one day to late for the three day long full moon party. At the entrance is also a small shop where you can buy Japanese goods like wind koi carps and wind bells. A really nice place to be and definitely a place to return to if we are in the vicinity again.
