Visiting the wizards

When you were a child, did you read the book “Krabat” of Otfried Preußler? The one in which a child becomes apprentice in a mill not knowing that the black arts are teached there? Not expecting that in the end every year one of the young residents has to die to keep the master alive? And where only true love could save you from death? If yes, then the name Schwarzkollm (Čorny Chołmc) does ring a bell to you.

It is a really strange feeling having read this name multiple times in a story and then standing at a railway station in no man’s land which carries the same name. Otfried Preußler who was born in the Czech Republic used a Sorb legend for his story and he located it at the corresponding place in Lusatia, where the Sorbs settled (close to Hoyerswerda).

When you leave the railway station and walk through the village you can easily find your way to the place where the mill at the Koselbruch should be located. And in fact the inhabitants of Schwarzkollm have built a touristic mill here which exhibits some pieces from the legend and offers some nice paths to roam the area.
