When visiting Istanbul, Turkey there is no way around to visit one of the main squares, the Taksim. It was once a main water hub which the name refers to. And if you go there you can use the main shopping street – İstiklal Caddesi. Numerous shops add up from Galata to Taksim. If you start at Galata bridge (Galata Köprüsü) you can simply walk up the hill towards the Galata tower and you can’t miss the main street.
On the other hand there is the funicular Kabataş-Taksim that starts at the Bosporus where you’ll have connections to the tramway and ferry boats. In addition – and only interesting for touristic purposes – there is an ancient tramway called Nostaljik Tramvay that runs İstiklal Caddesi up to Taksim.
On the square itself you’ll find the Republic monument (Cumhuriyet Anıtı), the Atatürk Cultural Center (Atatürk Kültür Merkezi) and close to it the Gezi park – one of the last places where you’ll find trees in the city center.
