Named after Heracles

Ηράκλειο, Greece is the biggest city on the island of Κρήτη (Kriti, Crete). It had different names during the time when it belonged to the republic of Venezia and to Turkey. It’s name goes back to the figure Heracles of Greek mythology.

It has 170000 inhabitants and is therefore the 4th largest city in Greece. It is a location of the university of Κρήτη and was one of the harbors of Κνωσός in minoic times. Ηράκλειο is no big city but it has a nice harbour with a fortress from Venetian times. From there you can easily access the city center.
