Castagnino

The Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes Juan B. Castagnino is Rosario’s principal museum of fine art, situated beside Parque Independencia at the junction of Avenida Pellegrini and Bulevar Oroño. Opened in its present building in 1937, it grew from cooperation between private collectors and the municipal authorities and now forms part of the Castagnino+macro museum network. Its historic collection focuses on European and Argentine art, while the related MACRO presents more contemporary work.

Inside, visitors can encounter European painting spanning roughly the fifteenth to the twentieth century, together with Argentine art from the early pioneers through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection also preserves important work by artists from Rosario and the surrounding region, making the museum particularly useful for understanding how local artistic life developed alongside wider European and Argentine traditions.

The building itself is worth allowing time for: its exhibition areas, long gallery walls, library, auditorium, conservation facilities and changing displays make it more than a small picture gallery. Depending on the programme, visitors may see historical works from the permanent collection alongside temporary exhibitions, thematic presentations and projects that place Rosario’s art in a broader cultural context.

At present, the Castagnino is in transition to a new building arrangement through a major extension and refurbishment project. The plans include approximately 1,500 square metres of additional space, improved storage for the collection, larger exhibition rooms, upgraded lighting and professional climate control. Some works are therefore being moved or shown in temporary configurations while the museum adapts; visitors should check the current opening arrangements and exhibition programme before planning a visit.
