Jagdschloss

Jagdschloss Granitz sits rather majestically in the heart of one of Rügen’s largest forested areas, and arriving there feels like stepping into a quieter, more reflective version of the island. The approach alone – whether on foot, by bike, or via the little narrow-gauge railway – sets the tone, with dense beech woodland gradually revealing glimpses of the castle’s distinctive silhouette. It is not an overwhelmingly large structure, but its position atop the Tempelberg gives it a commanding presence that is difficult to ignore.

Architecturally, the castle is a fine example of mid-19th century romantic historicism, commissioned by Prince Wilhelm Malte I of Putbus. The central tower is undoubtedly the highlight, both visually and experientially. Inside, a remarkable cast-iron spiral staircase winds its way upwards in an almost hypnotic fashion. Climbing it is part of the experience – slightly dizzying, but absolutely worthwhile – especially when you reach the viewing platform and are rewarded with sweeping views across Rügen, stretching as far as the Baltic Sea on a clear day.

What makes Jagdschloss Granitz particularly appealing is how it balances its historical character with accessibility. The interiors are modest compared to grand palaces elsewhere in Germany, yet they offer a well-curated insight into aristocratic hunting culture and 19th-century life. There is a certain understated elegance throughout, and one gets the sense that this was always intended as a retreat rather than a display of excess.

Beyond the building itself, the surrounding Granitz forest is very much part of the attraction. The network of trails invites slow exploration, and it is easy to spend several hours here without feeling rushed. Whether you arrive for the history, the views, or simply the tranquillity, Jagdschloss Granitz manages to deliver a well-rounded experience that feels both authentic and pleasantly unspoilt – something that is becoming increasingly rare in more heavily visited parts of the Baltic coast.

Enjoy climbing up to the tower on narrow stairs and learn something about the Putbus family. Around the Jagdschloss and next to the bus stop (and bike parking area) you‘ll find different eateries and beer gardens.
