Klis

Klis fortress, perched above Split in a commanding position between the mountains and the coast, has spent most of its life doing exactly what a fortress should do: watching, defending and surviving. Its roots go back to the Illyrians, and over the centuries it became a key stronghold under the Croats, then a hard-fought prize during the Ottoman advance, when it stood as one of Dalmatia’s most important defensive positions.

What makes it so engaging today is that it is not just a ruin frozen in time. Visitors can walk through the ramparts, gatehouses and stone passages, take in sweeping views over Split and the Adriatic, and explore the museum displays of weapons, armour and uniforms. There is also a small church and other restored spaces that give a sense of how the fortress was used in different periods.

Part of the appeal is that much of what you see now reflects later rebuilding rather than the fortress’s original medieval form. That does not weaken the visit; if anything, it adds to the sense of a place that was continuously adapted for war, rule and survival. You are looking at a living layer-cake of Croatian, Venetian and Ottoman history.

For many travellers, though, Klis is also instantly recognisable as a Game of Thrones location. It stood in for Meereen, the city associated with Daenerys Targaryen, and that connection has made it far more familiar to international visitors. There is even a small area devoted to the series, which gives fans a neat extra reason to climb up there, even though the real draw remains the fortress itself and the extraordinary setting.
