Around Fès you can discover two fortresses that have been built in 1582 to oversee the city, the Borj Nord and Borj Sud. The northern fortress is today a weaponry museum and not far away you can discover two ruins: the tombeaux des Mérinides. What was once the royal necropolis of the Marinid dynasty is today mostly a viewpoint. From here you can have amazing views on the entire city distributed throughout the valley.
The necropolis dates back to the 11th or 12th century CE and consists of two ruins of buildings. In the past two tombstones have been found here and are now located at the Dar Bat’ha museum in the city center. Thorough excavations have not been carried out in this place so far – maybe there will be more discoveries in the future. If you want to get up here I would suggest to take a petite taxi. The way down is then an easy hike: you can pass on stairs through a graveyard and enter the medina again through the Bab Guissa gate.
