Honestly, I would have never found the Bellboy Bar at Berlin‘s Gendarmenmarkt on my own. I’ve slept multiple times at the Hilton hotel but never discovered the inconspicuous door not far from the hotel entrance. And not having been there would have been a real loss; I didn’t have so much fun in many bars across the globe like I did there. It is an amazing combination of atmosphere, drinks and playful surprises.
Once your entering the Bellboy Bar you’re standing in a small hotel lobby guarded by a receptionist in front of a wall with room keys. It is like checking in at Wes Andersons Grand Hotel Budapest. You’ll then be directed into one of two rooms which are not connected; we ended up in large hall designed in 1920s style. Once you have accustomed yourself to the beautiful surroundings you need to choose from the crazy cocktail menu. They invest a lot of love not only in creating cocktails, but also in serving them in very special glasses: some drinks come in Hulk hands or mugs that look like fishes or rabbits.
‘I’m never gonna dance again, guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend, I know you’re not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I’d been given
So I’m never gonna dance again the way I danced with you, oh’– Careless Whisper, George Michael
I enjoyed the Tooth Fairy very much which arrives in a giant ceramic tooth with a toothbrush on top. It is a pisco sour like drink that tastes best if you first brush your teeth with their mint tooth paste. A great cocktail and you can also create some irritation by brushing your teeth inside a bar. 😉 But the real fun starts once you decide to go to the loo: first you’ll have to pass through two doors that look like an elevator (and some people fail to pass for quite some time).
Once you’ve managed that step you’ll enter a bathroom that is rather like a disco, with a giant disco ball at the ceiling. The play George Michaels Careless Whisper on infinite loop and after being at the neon-light lit mens bathroom completely colored in pink you won’t get that melody out of your head anymore.
