Church in the rocks

The Temppeliaukion kirkko of Helsinki is a special church with a wonderful atmosphere: it is built partially into the rocks of the capital city. The church was opened in 1969 and is cut into the granite, but it has a glass roof that floods the church with light. While sitting inside you still see that you’re inside a rock as the walls are not covered.

As the church has no bell tower there are no physical bells; the sound is just played electronically. Today the church is of course used for protestant divine services but also as a place of concerts. Also many tourists visit this unique church which you can find in the city quarter Töölö, just one kilometer west of the main railway station.
