Grenzlandmuseum

If you grow up in nowadays Germany you can’t imagine anymore that this country was once divided. That there was a well-protected and visible border through the country, visible as an illuminated stripe at night. That people were dying between BRD and DDR, along the iron curtain. There are some places throughout Germany where you can learn about this. The best I’ve seen so far is located south of Duderstadt: The Grenzlandmuseum Eichsfeld at Teistungen.

The museum is located at the inner-German border crossing between Duderstadt and Worbis. The buildings at the border have been preserved and extended to suit the needs of the museum, but the original structures are still visible. You can still see the fences and the blocks which were used to stop vehicles. In 1990 the Grenzübergangspunkt was not used anymore and already in 1995 the Grenzlandmuseum Eichsfeld was opened.

Having such places as an absolute necessity. You can’t explain someone who the German division looked like. The museum tells the history of the border, the border security measures of the DDR, aspects of life with and near the border und the repression existing in the East-German state. Changing exhibitions add to this frequently.

What I find even more impressive is that you can walk along the former border and imagine how this situation has shaped the life of the people. Close to the Grenzlandmuseum the fences and death zone have been preserved, also the watchtower. What you see there was normal all along the border in Germany (apart from the Berlin wall).
