Always bad news from Dresden, Germany: every monday a movement of ant-islamic and xenophobic citizens demonstrates their view on politics, inviting speakers that even cross the border to fascist statements. And the crude excesses at the asylum-seeker housing in close-by Heidenau. And the violence-prone “fans” of the soccer club Dynamo Dresden. A city to avoid?
This all stands in big contrast to the beauty of the city center, sometimes named the Firenze at the river Elbe. You can easily walk from the wonderful Frauenkirche along the Fürstenzug to the Zwinger and Semperoper. And after crossing the Elbe on the Augustusbrücke you have a nice panoramic view on the city and can even enjoy a local beer at a little beer garden. Don’t ignore Dresden: it and its mostly cordial people deserve something better.
