Warnemünde

Warnemünde is a seaside resort 10 km north of Rostock, Germany. You can go there to walk along the beach, visit the lighthouse or eat some fresh fish. The best of all is Matjes (soused herring) – raw herring stored in mild vinegar pickle. But try for yourself.

When going to Warnemünde you have to pass Rostock-Lichtenhagen, a residential area where you see a house with a sunflower on it – a picture pretty well-known to Germans. In 1992 a big mob of xenophobic people set fire on this house while 100 Vietnamese were inside; a day of shame that will never be forgotten.
